Elton John, a.k.a. Sir Elton Hercules John, was born Reginald Kenneth Dwight on March 25, 1947, in England. The singer-songwriter, composer and pianist has won numerous Grammys, plus an Academy Award, a Golden Globe and a Tony. Elton was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994. His single “Candle in the Wind,” which he sang at Princess Diana’s funeral, sold over 37 million copies. Elton was knighted in 1998. In 2008, he was ranked as the most successful male solo artist on the Billboard Hot 100 Top All-Time Artists list. Elton has ten godchildren, including Elizabeth Hurley’s son and the Beckhams’ children.
