With acting in his blood, it's no wonder that Matthew Broderick has become one of the stage's most well-known actors. Matthew was born on March 1, 1962 in New York City, the son of actor James Broderick. He went into the family business after studying drama in high school and made his stage debut in a play called On Valentine's Day opposite his famous father. He went on to a lead role in the off-Broadway production of Torch Song Trilogy with Harvey Fierstein, which got him noticed by the Broadway community and led to him landing the lead role in Neil Simon's Brighton Beach Memoirs, which won him a Tony award (he later appeared as the same character in Simon's Biloxi Blues.) Matthew made the transition to the big screen with a little help from his Dad, co-starring with him in Max Dugan Returns. Matthew became a star on his own with the 1983 computer adventure WarGames, co-starring Ally Sheedy. 1986 brought Matthew his biggest success, and the role he's best know for, high school student 'Ferris Bueller' in the John Hughes comedy Ferris Bueller's Day Off. He later reprised his roles in Torch Song and Biloxi Blues on the big screen and also found success in the Civil War drama Glory and the comedy The Freshman, co-starring Marlon Brando. In 1994, Matthew voiced 'Simba' in the animated Disney film The Lion King and in he received rave reviews in 1999 for his portrayal of a high school teacher at odds with an overachieving student played by Reese Witherspoon in the dark comedy Election. Despite his success on the big screen, Matthew never strayed far from the Broadway stage and appeared in the 1995 revival of How to Succeed in Business without Really Trying, in a role which won him a Tony award. In 2001, he co-starred with Nathan Lane in the Mel Brooks musical The Producers (and later starred in the film version.) Nathan and Matthew also stared in a 2005 revival of the play The Odd Couple. One couple that's not odd, however is Matthew and wife Sarah Jessica Parker, who have been together since their May 19, 1997 nuptials and have a son James Wilke Broderick (born on October 28, 2002.) Matthew remains one actor everyone would love to spend a day off with.
