Known for her exotic looks and fiery temper, Naomi Campbell has definitely put the fierce in modeling. Naomi was born in the London suburb of Streatham on May 22, 1970. Her mother was a professional dancer, and Naomi took up dance as a child, getting her first exposure in music videos by Bob Marley (1978's 'Is This Love?') and later Culture Club, appearing as a tap dancer in their video for 'I'll Tumble 4 Ya.' At the age of 15, she was discovered by a modeling agency head while shopping in London's Covent Garden. She soon signed on with Elite Model management and began her modeling career as a runway model. Soon after, she began appearing in ad campaigns for such clients as Lee Jeans and Ralph Lauren and at 15, she got a lucky break when a model bailed on a photo shoot and landed on the cover of Elle magazine. In August of 1988, she received the distinction of being the first black cover model for Vogue Paris and went on to grace the covers of over 500 magazines. In the early 1990s, Naomi was regarded among the world's top supermodels, along with such beauties as Cindy Crawford, Claudia Schiffer and Linda Evangelista. She also posed nude for Playboy and appeared in Madonna's scandalous 1992 book Sex. In addition, she has appeared on the big screen in small roles in Ready to Wear, To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar and Spike Lee's Girl 6. Lately, Naomi has been making headlines for her activities off the runway, being accused of and later arrested for physical and verbal abuse. In January of 2007, she was found guilty of assaulting her former maid and spent five days mopping the floors at the New York Department of Sanitation. In April of 2008, she was again arrested for assaulting a police officer at London's Heathrow Airport. At least Naomi has been able to laugh at herself, making fun of her anger management problems in a 2007 commercial for Dunkin Donuts. Between her still-active modeling career and her less-than-model behavior, people will be talking about Naomi Watts for years to come.
