Sacha Baron Cohen

Who is Sacha Baron Cohen? Is he the gangsta wannabe 'Ali G.', the gay Austrian fashion reporter 'Bruno' or clueless Kazakh export 'Borat Sagdiyev'? Or is he just one brilliant comedian?  Sacha was born on October 13, 1971 in London, England. He began acting in plays as a teenager and later attended England's prestigious Cambridge University, where he studied history and performed in a number of plays including Cyrano de Bergerac and Fiddler on the Roof. After finishing his studies, he began to make appearances on British television and gained star status in his native England when his character 'Ali G.' became a regular on the sketch comedy show The Eleven O'Clock Show in 1998. The character was so popular that he got his own show, Da Ali G. Show in 2000. His interviews with politicians and other famous people  - including Ralph Nader, Donald Trump and Shaquille O'Neal - unaware of the fact that Ali was a character were a central part of the show. Ali was first introduced to American audiences in Madonna's 2000 video for 'Music', where he made a cameo appearance as a limo driver. In 2002, Ali was given the big-screen treatment in the British film Ali G. Indahouse. US audiences jumped on the bandwagon when his television show was aired on HBO in 2003. In addition to the title character, Ali G. introduced two other Sacha creations, fashion reporter 'Bruno' and Kazakhstani correspondent 'Borat.' Due to the success of Ali G. in the US, Sacha was offered a guest starring spot on Curb Your Enthusiasm, provided the voice of the lemur king, 'King Julian,' in the animated film Madagascar, and co-starred with Will Ferrell as French race car driver 'Jean Girard' in Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby. In 2006, Borat hit movie screens, traveling across America in search of Pamela Anderson in Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan. The film was a surprise success, taking the number one spot in the box office in its first week and going on to gross over $128 million in the US alone. The film also won Sacha a Golden Globe in the Best Actor - Musical or Comedy category. In 2007 he published a comic travel guide as Borat, with dual titles: Borat: Touristic Guidings To Minor Nation of U.S. and A. and Borat:Touristic Guidings To Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan. And by the end of the year Sacha decided to retire the character because he was so recognizable that he could no longer conduct the interviews that made the film such a success - and the subject of a number of lawsuits, all of which were eventually thrown out of court. Even though Borat is gone, Sacha has proven that he can take on any role, recently appearing as the evil 'Signor Adolfo Pirelli' alongside Johnny Depp in Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. Sacha is engaged to actress Isla Fisher and the couple has a child, Olive, born on October 17, 2007. Next up for Sacha is a feature film for Bruno. His three most well-known characters may soon be gone - but not forgotten - audiences can be assured that Sacha Baron Cohen has only just begun, and is sure to keep creating unforgettable characters.
