Salma Hayek has gone from telenovela star to television and film producer and is still one of the más bonita actresses in Hollywood. Salma Hayek Jiménez was born on September 2, 1966 in Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz, Mexico. Growing up, she aspired to be a gymnast but her dreams of Olympic gold were crushed when her father prevented her from being recruited by the Mexican national team. She later studied International Relations at the Universidad Iberoamericana in Mexico City, but still wanting to be in the spotlight, left school to pursue a career in acting. Salma became a star in her native Mexico when, at the age of 23, she landed the lead role on the telenovela Teresa. The show ran from 1989 to 1991 and also starred Gael GarcÃa Bernal. After Teresa went off the air, Salma went to Los Angeles and studied under acting coach Stella Adler. She was introduced to American audiences thanks to director Robert Rodriguez, who cast her opposite Antonio Banderas in the 1995 action film Desperado. The next year she appeared in Rodriguez's horror film From Dusk Till Dawn, starring Quentin Tarantino and George Clooney. Her small, but memorable role as 'Santanico Pandemonium,' a seductive vampire queen, raised the temperature in movie theaters across the country. The late 90s were busy for the actress, co-starring with Matthew Perry in Fools Rush In, Mike Myers in 54 and Will Smith in Wild Wild West. In 2000, she formed her own production company, called Ventanarosa, which was responsible for the 2002 biopic Frida, starring Salma as the legendary Mexican painter Frida Kahlo. Her performance in the film earned Salma an Oscar nomination for her performance, making her one of only three Mexican actresses to have been nominated for an Academy Award. In addition to films, Salma also serves as executive producer for the hit TV series Ugly Betty, which won a Golden Globe Award for Best Comedy Series in 2007. Making a guest-starring appearance as magazine editor 'Sofia Reyes,' Salma also earned an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series. In April 2007, she teamed up with MGM to become the CEO of her own Latin-themed film production company, Ventanazul. The following month she signed a two-year deal development deal with ABC to develop projects for the network through Ventanarosa. Salma's proudest production is daughter Valentina Paloma Pinault, born September 21, 2007, her first child with French businessman François-Henri Pinault. Whether she's working behind the scenes or in front of the camera, Salma Hayek is still muy caliente.
