Bio

The first Academy Awards ceremony occurred on May 16, 1929, and was held at the Hotel Roosevelt in Hollywood. The Academy Awards, also known as the Oscars, acknowledges the work of those in the film industry, such as actors, writers and directors. The oldest awards ceremony, it is televised yearly; several nominees in many specific categories are announced. The Academy Awards were first televised on NBC, but later got switched over to ABC. The winners are determined by the members of the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences; fewer than 6,000 are eligible to vote. The 83rd Annual Academy Awards will be presented on February 27, 2011, and are expected to bring in anywhere from 30 to 55 million viewers.
