Aretha Franklin was born March 25, 1942, in Memphis, Tennessee. She is a legendary singer-songwriter who is known around the world as the Queen of Soul. Twenty of her singles have reached number one on the Billboard R&B Singles Chart, including “Chain of Fools,” “Think” and “I Ain’t Never Loved a Man (The Way I Love You).” Her 1967 single “Respect” was her first song to make it to number one on the Billboard Hot 100. In the course of her career, Aretha has released 36 studio albums, seven live albums, 36 compilation albums and 131 singles. She has won 18 Grammy Awards and has been inducted into both the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the U. K. Music Hall of Fame. She also received the National Medal of Arts in 1999 and was the second African-American woman to appear on the cover of Time. She has been married and divorced twice, and has two children.
