Elvis Presley was born January 8, 1935, in Tupelo, Mississippi. The music icon is considered to be the “King of Rock and Roll” and is often referred to as “the King.” In January 1956, Elvis released his first single, “Heartbreak Hotel,” which hit number one on the Billboard chart. Many, many hit records followed. In the course of his career, the King released almost 140 singles and 74 albums. By August 2010, he had more than 150 gold, platinum and multiplatinum albums and singles—the most in history. He is the best-selling recording artist of all time, having sold more than one billion records. Elvis was nominated for 14 Grammys, winning three, and received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award at age 36. He has been inducted into four music halls of fame. In 1973, Elvis staged a concert via satellite—Aloha from Hawaii—that was seen by approximately 1.5 billion people. In 1956, Elvis made his film debut in Love Me Tender. He went on to appear in 30 more films, the last being the 1969 movie Change of Habit. Elvis married Priscilla Beaulieu in 1967, and they had one child, Lisa Marie, before divorcing in 1973. On August 16, 1977, Elvis Presley was found unresponsive on the bathroom floor. He had died at the age of 42.
