Eminem was born Marshall Bruce Mathers III on October 17, 1972, in Saint Joseph, Missouri. The rapper, actor and record producer first hit it big with his 1999 debut album The Slim Shady LP, which won the 2000 Grammy for Best Rap Album. In 2002, he turned to acting with the critically acclaimed film 8 Mile, for which he won the 2003 MTV Movie Awards for Best Male Performance and Breakthrough Male Performance. His song “Lose Yourself,” from the movie’s soundtrack, won the 2003 Academy Award for Best Original Song. Eminem is the best-selling artist of the decade 2000-2010, selling more than 80 million albums worldwide. He was ranked 79th on VH1’s “100 Greatest Artists of All Time” list, and 82nd on Rolling Stone Magazine’s “100 Greatest Artists of All Time” list. In 2008, Vibe gave Eminem the title “Best Rapper Alive.” Over the years, he has had very public legal problems, drug issues and conflicts with family members and other artists, including Mariah Carey and Murder, Inc. Eminem has one child, a daughter named Hailie Scott, with ex-wife Kimberly Ann Scott. He also adopted Kimberly’s niece, Alaina, her child from a previous relationship, Whitney, and is the legal guardian of his younger half-brother, Nathan.
