From being the most well-known hype man with one of the most famous and influential groups in rap music to having hordes of women complete to win his love, Flavor Flav definitely knows what time it is. William Jonathan Drayton Jr. was born on March 16, 1959 in Charlotte, North Carolina, was a classically-trained pianist, but, as he got older, became more attracted to hip-hop and rap, performing under the stage name MC DJ Flavor.
He met graphic design student Carlton Ridenhour when he was working as a disc jockey at New York's Adelphi University and in 1982 Carlton formed the group Public Enemy using the stage name Chuck D. Public Enemy released its first album, Yo! Bum Rush the Show in 1987, which laid down the band's unique sound and established Flav's character as the comic relief to Chuck D's socially conscious straight man. Flav, with his sunglasses, gold teeth and over-sized clocks not only served to pump the audience up during the band's live performances, but also rapped on some of the group's biggest hits, including '911 is a Joke,' 'Can't Do Nuttin' For Ya Man' and 'Don't Believe the Hype.' Throughout the 90s, the band released albums and toured. Flav got himself into trouble with the law, finding himself under arrest numerous times on assault and drug charges. In 1997, after a drug overdose, he checked himself into rehab and claims to be clean and sober to this day.
With Public Enemy sporadically touring and working on new material, Flav went in search of another outlet where he could perform. He found the perfect venue in cable network VH-1 when he was cast on the third season of the reality show The Surreal Life, where he shared a home with actress Brigitte Nielsen. The odd chemistry between the two fueled a spin-off, Strange Love, in 2005. Not finding love with the amazonian actress, VH-1 gave Flav his own reality show, Flavor of Love in January of 2006. The show was a smash hit and not only did Flav get two more seasons to find 'Ms. Right,' the show also spun-off I Love New York and Charm School. At the reunion for Flavor of Love 3 in May of 2008, Flav proposed to the mother of his seventh child, Karma. With a career spanning two decades, this rap icon is far from being just the 'flavor of the month.'
