Bio

Geraldine Estelle Halliwell was born on August 6, 1972 in Watford, Hertfordshire, England. She auditioned for and won a spot in the group called Touch - which eventually became the Spice Girls. With the worldwide success of their debut single 'Wannabe' in 1996, the Spice Girls became a phenomenon. Their first album, Spice, sold 23 million copies worldwide and is the best-selling album of the all time by a female group. The follow-up album, Spiceworld was also a smash, the Spice Girls remained the biggest-selling pop group of both 1997 and 1998. Geri, originally nicknamed Sexy Spice, opted to be dubbed Ginger Spice due to her red locks. She created an indelible image when she performed at the 1997 BRIT Awards in a Union Jack minidress.  The girls released the comedy film Spiceworld: The Movie in 1997, which earned them all a nomination for worst actress at the annual Razzie awards. Before the group embarked on their first tour of North America in May of 1998, Geri left the band. She released her first solo album, Schizophonic in 1999 with the lead single 'Look at Me.' The video for the song featured a scene where 'Ginger Spice' is put to rest. Although the album wasn't a big seller, it was the highest charting effort for a solo Spice album in the U.S. Geri released two more solo albums, Scream If You Wanna Go Faster in 2001 and Passion in 2005, both of which were not made available in the US. The lead single off of Scream, a remake of The Weather Girls' classic "It's Raining Men' was featured on the soundtrack of Bridget Jones' Diary. In addition to her solo career, Geri has released two autobiographies, If Only in 1999 and Just for the Record in 2002 and has also released two yoga DVDs, Geri Yoga and Geri Body Yoga. Geri also produced a daughter, Bluebell Madonna, on May 14, 2006. In 2007, Geri reunited with the Spice Girls for a reunion tour, which was cut short in February of 2008. The singer has officially traded in her platform boots for a pen, writing a series of children's novels revolving around the character 'Ugenia Lavender', the first of which was published in the UK on May 2, 2008. In interviews promoting the book, Geri says she has no plans to revive her singing career. Fans of her music will miss her singing, but with her new venture she's sure to empower a whole new generation of girls.
