Rocker, clothing designer, philanthropist and proud Pop Joel Madden began life as Joel Reuben Combs on March 11, 1979, in Waldorf, Maryland. Joel and his twin brother, Benji, had the music in them at a young age and formed their first band while still in high school. Joel and Benji started Good Charlotte with school buddies Paul Thomas and Aaron Escolopio. The band has had four successful albums and scored their biggest hit with Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous. Not content to merely be a rock star, Joel, his brother and friend Tal Cooperman started their own fashion line, DCMA Collective, in 2006 as an online business. In March of 2008 they opened the first DCMA boutique in Los Angeles. Cupid's arrow struck Joel in December 2006, when he began dating Simple Life star Nicole Richie. The pair welcomed daughter Harlow Winter on January 11, 2008 and then son Sparrow James less than two years later. Even though he lives a rich and famous lifestyle, Joel makes sure to give back: He and Nicole founded the Richie-Madden Children's Foundation, a charity designed to help mothers and families in need. Here are some interesting facts about the rocker: • The middle-class Madden family dealt with hardships during Joel's childhood (his father left the family when he was only 15). To make some extra money, he and his brother would wash people's hair at a salon. • In the 2001 film Not Another Teen Movie, Good Charlotte appeared as the band at the school's prom. • He gave up smoking when his daughter was born.
