Maggie Gyllenhaal

Bio

Her name is as memorable as the roles she has played, and Maggie Gyllenhaal has already created a stable of unforgettable characters in her brief career. Maggie was born on November 16, 1977, in New York's Lower East Side, the daughter of director Stephen Gyllenhaal and film producer and screenwriter Naomi Achs. She graduated in 1999 from Columbia University with a Bachelor of Arts in Literature and spent a summer at London's Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. Her first three films were all directed by her father, her first being 1992's Waterland. She then worked on A Dangerous Woman and Homegrown, which also featured her younger brother Jake. She went on to supporting roles in John Waters' comedy Cecil B. Demented, Riding in Cars with Boys with Drew Barrymore and co-starred as the on-screen sibling to her real-life brother Jake in the cult classic Donnie Darko. Maggie's next role in 2002's controversial and kinky Secretary, opposite James Spader, thrust her into the spotlight. Her follow-up roles included a 1950s era college student in the drama Mona Lisa Smile with Julia Roberts, a troubled single mother in Sherrybaby and an angry auditee in Stranger Then Fiction with Will Ferrell. Her next film is the eagerly-awaited sequel to Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, where Maggie plays 'Rachel Dawes,' the part originally played by Katie Holmes. From indie sweetheart to blockbuster babe, Maggie has proven that she can win over any audience.
