Melanie Brown has led a more spicy-than-scary life. Her professional career began when she answered an ad in the newspaper looking for singers to from a band. Melanie answered the ad, and the group evolved into the Spice Girls, one of the most successful girl groups in music history. Melanie, known also by Mel B and her band nickname 'Scary Spice' - due to her wild hair, penchant for animal prints and in-your-face attitude - quickly rose to stardom, releasing three successful albums and a film, Spice World. During her time in the band, Melanie had a number one solo hit in the UK, 'I Want You Back' with Missy Elliot.
After the band went their separate ways in 2001, Melanie continued to record as a solo artist, but was finding limited success, eventually being dropped by her record label. In 2004, she was approached to take over the role of Mimi in the Broadway musical Rent, which she did from April to September. Melanie continued to make guest appearances on television shows in the UK and made headlines in the US after she was romantically linked with Eddie Murphy in 2006 and gave birth to her daughter Angel Iris Murphy Brown on April 3, 2007. Paternity tests later revealed the baby was his. Two months later, she married movie producer Stephen Belafonte in a low-key ceremony in Las Vegas.
In September of 2007, Mel was invited to compete on the fifth season of the U.S. reality competition Dancing with the Stars. Mel and her partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy came in second place behind race car driver Helio Castroneves. 2007 also reunited the singer with her Spice Girls band mates for a sold-out reunion tour. Mel (born on May 29, 1975 in Leeds, West Yorkshire, England) has continued to keep herself busy, riding on the momentum of her recent successes, serving as a special correspondent on Access Hollywood, doing reality show The Singing Office with Joey Fatone on TLC and launching her own fashion line, Catty Couture in April of 2008. Even though her musical career has been less than spicy, Melanie continues to prove herself as a well-rounded entertainer.
