Pete Doherty

Often seen in the company of Amy Winehouse, singer Pete Doherty has lived an equally turbulent life, with drug arrests, rehab stints and rollercoaster relationships. Pete was born on March 12, 1979 in Hexham, Northumberland, England. In his youth, he was an exceptional student and when he was 16, he won a poetry competition and embarked on a tour of Russia. He continued his studies at the University of London, studying English literature, but left school after his first year. After leaving school, Pete hooked up with his friend, musician  Carl Barât, and the pair formed a band called The Libertines in the late '90s. In 2002, the band released its debut album, Up the Bracket, which attracted attention and put the band on the path to mainstream success. Pete was singled out as one of Britain's most promising young songwriters, but his recurring drug problems and his arrest for for burgling Barât's apartment, led to him being asked to leave the band twice, with the Libertines unofficially disbanding in 2004. Pete started up a new band, Babyshambles, towards the end of his time with The Libertines. The band released two studio albums, Down in Albion, in November 2005 and Shotters Nation in October 2007 and gained popularity in the UK, but their touring schedule has often been interrupted by Pete's ongoing legal woes.  In 2005, he began a relationship with supermodel Kate Moss that has been the subject of many a tabloid headline. Their tumultuous, on-again, off-again relationship finally ended in July of 2007. In addition to music, Pete has expressed himself through poetry, drawing and photographs, which were assembled into a book,  The Books Of Albion: The Collected Writings of Peter Doherty, released in June of 2007. His paintings were also exhibited in Paris in 2008. On April 8, 2008, he was jailed for 14 weeks by a court for breaching a probation order after a string of brushes with the law for drugs and driving offenses. His sentence was eventually cut in half and reduced due to a government plan to reduce prison overcrowding. Pete is reportedly working on his first studio album, which he hopes to release in the summer of 2008. Here's to hoping his music will keep him in the public eye more than his tabloid-ready exploits.
