Rachel Griffiths

Aussie import Rachel Griffiths got her big break playing the BFF of an ABBA-loving wannabe bride and has gone on to star on some of TV's most respected dramas. Rachel was born on December 18, 1968 in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. She attended Melbourne's Victoria College, earning a Bachelor of Education degree in drama and dance. She began her career as a member of a community theater group in Geelong called Woolly Jumpers. She made a few appearances on Australian television before getting her break in the international sleeper hit Muriel's Wedding in 1994. The film made stars of Rachel and her co-star Toni Collette and earned Rachel both the Australian Film Critics Award and the Australian Film Institute Awards for Best Supporting Actress. She paired up again with Toni in the 1996 drama Cosi and co-starred with Kate Winslet in the drama Jude that same year. Thanks to Muriel director P.J. Hogan, Rachel was exposed to US audiences in his 1997 comedy My Best Friend's Wedding with Julia Roberts. The next year, she received an Academy Award nomination for her portrayal of British flautist Hilary du Pré in the drama Hilary and Jackie, co-starring Emily Watson. In 2001, Rachel was critically praised for her role as Johnny Depp's mother in the drama Blow - an especially challenging role for the actress as she is five years younger than Johnny in real life. That same year, Rachel signed on to play her most well-known role as massage therapist 'Brenda Chenowith' on the HBO series Six Feet Under. She was on the series for its 2001 to 2005 and won a Golden Globe and a number of Screen Actors Guild Awards with the cast of the show, as well as receiving two Emmy nominations. After Six Feet Under wrapped, Rachel went on to co-star alongside Calista Flockhart, Sally Field and Rob Lowe on the acclaimed ABC series Brothers and Sisters, earning her another Emmy nomination. In real life, Rachel married Australian artist Andrew Taylor, on December 31, 2002 and has two children, son Banjo Patrick (born November 22, 2003) and daughter Adelaide Rose (born June 23, 2005.) With Brothers and Sisters returning in the fall of 2008, audiences are sure to see more of this talented actress.
