Rihanna was born Robyn Rihanna Fenty on February 20, 1988, in Saint Michael, Barbados. She is a Grammy-winning recording artist and songwriter who moved to the U.S. at the age of 16 to pursue her music career. After signing with Def Jam Records in 2005, she released her debut studio album, Music of the Sun, which featured the hit single “Pon de Replay.” The album was certified gold. In 2006, she released her second studio album, A Girl Like Me, which featured the hit singles “SOS” and “Unfaithful”; the album went platinum. Her third studio album, Good Girl Gone Bad, was released in 2007 and went multi-platinum, featuring the hits “Umbrella,” “Take a Bow, “Shut Up and Drive” and “Disturbia.” The album was nominated for nine Grammy Awards, winning one. Rihanna’s fourth studio album, Rated R, was released in 2009 and featured the singles “Hard” and “Rude Boy.” It also went platinum. In 2010, she released her fifth studio album, Loud, which features the single “Only Girl (In the World).” Seven of Rihanna’s songs have hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and in 2010, Rihanna won two Grammys for her performance on Jay-Z’s 2009 single “Run This Town.” Rihanna is also a philanthropist; in 2006, she founded the Believe Foundation, which helps terminally ill children. In 2009, Rihanna was scheduled to perform at the Grammy Awards, but she never made it. It was later reported that she had been the victim of domestic abuse at the hands of boyfriend Chris Brown, who was subsequently arrested for assault. Brown pled guilty and received five years probation.
