River Phoenix


River Phoenix was born August 3, 1970, in Metolius, Oregon. He was an Oscar-nominated actor who was best known for his roles in the films Stand By Me and My Own Private Idaho. He began acting at age 10, but his first notable appearance was his starring turn in 1986’s Stand by Me. In 1988, River transitioned into more mature roles with Running on Empty, which earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. In 1989, he starred as the young Indiana Jones in the blockbuster movie Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, after which he landed a starring role in the critically acclaimed Gus Van Sant film My Own Private Idaho. On October 31, 1993, River died of a drug overdose outside Johnny Depp’s L.A. club The Viper Room. He was 23 years old. River was the oldest sibling of Rain, Joaquin, Liberty and Summer Phoenix, all of whom are now actors. His brother Joaquin was with him when he died.
