Sean John Combs was born November 4, 1969, in New York, New York. He is best known for being a record producer, rapper, actor and men’s fashion designer. Sean has changed his stage name three times, from “Puff Daddy” to “P. Diddy” and finally “Diddy.” While attending Howard University in Washington, D.C., he landed an internship at Uptown Records in N.Y.C.; eventually, he dropped out of college and became a top executive at Uptown. There he developed the R&B group Jodeci and signed the R&B singer Mary J. Blige. In 1992, he partnered with Connecticut DJ Big Balla Sledge and started a label, Hip Hart Beat Records; the label faded, however, when the two friends split. A year later, Diddy started his own label, Bad Boy Records. He signed on newcomers The Notorious B.I.G., Faith Evans and 112. He also started producing music for Usher, Lil’ Kim, TLC, Mariah Carey, Boyz II Men, SWV and Aretha Franklin. In 1997, he was finally convinced to make his own music. His debut album, No Way Out, won the 1998 Grammy Award for Best Rap Album. Rivalries with other labels, most notoriously the West Coast’s Death Row Records, ensued. In 1999, Sean and then-girlfriend Jennifer Lopez were arrested in New York City after an incident in a nightclub involving guns. In 2002, in an effort to reinvent his image, he created an MTV reality show called Making the Band. He then spearheaded the “Vote or Die” campaign for the 2004 Presidential Election. In 2008, he created a reality show for VH1 entitled I Want to Work for Diddy. That same year, he created a men’s perfume, “I Am King,” and also acquired the Enyce clothing line from Liz Claiborne for $20 million. Other business ventures include his men’s fashion line, Sean John, which is sold at Macy’s stores nationwide, and a restaurant in Atlanta called Justin’s, which is named after his son. Sean has also appeared in several movies, the most recent being the 2010 comedy Get Him to the Greek. Sean is the biological father of five children, three of whom live with their mother, Kim Porter. In 2007, Sean took legal custody of his alleged daughter with ex-girlfriend Sarah Chapman, upon which Porter broke up with him. He has never been married.
