Shakira was born Shakira Mebarak Ripoll on February 2, 1977, in Barranquilla, Colombia. The Grammy-winning singer-songwriter is best known for her Latin-inspired pop hits, especially her hit single “Whenever, Wherever,” which reached number six on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart and jumpstarted her career in the U.S. The song was the biggest hit worldwide in 2002. Shakira had been singing in Spanish for nearly 10 years before Americans discovered her. Her first crossover album, Laundry Service, was released in 2001. Her next two albums, Oral Fixation and She Wolf, added more chart-toppers to Shakira’s résumé, such as “Hips Don’t Lie,” which hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. And it was her fluid, hip-shaking dance moves that made her a video star. Shakira’s belly-dancing techniques come from her Lebanese heritage. Shakira has won two Grammys and was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Original Song in 2008. In the course of her career, she has sold more than 60 million albums worldwide. Shakira is currently a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador; in 2010, she won the U.N.’s Social Justice for Peace Award for her commitment to Latin-American charities. She has been dating Latin-American hottie Antonio de la Rue for 10 years.
