Winona Laura Horowitz was born on October 29, 1970, in Winona, Minnesota. She grew up in a hippie commune in Northern California where there was no electricity. She's the goddaughter of Timothy Leary, and her parents were friends with beat poet Allen Ginsberg. Winona played the odd girl out in Heathers, and though her agent begged her not to take the role, the flick has gone on to cult status. She followed that up with a string of films that brought her accolades and award nominations-Mermaids, The Age of Innocence, Girl, Interrupted and Edward Scissorhands. In 2001, she was arrested for grand theft shoplifting. She was eventually sentenced to 480 hours of community service, three years' probation, $3,700 in fines, $6,355 in restitution and the collective disapproval of all of America. In 2008, she was caught leaving a store in Hollywood with makeup she had not paid for. No charges were filed...except the one of What the heck were you thinking?! She's set for the new big-screen installment of Star Trek and has a slew of nebulous film projects in the works.
