Celebrity Kids: Fair Game or Foul Play?

Nov 24, 2009 at 1:25pm

The world cares about Suri Cruise, Maddox Jolie-Pitt and Violet Affleck. It just does.  I’ve seen the numbers.

But when does coverage of celebrity kids go too far, or can it?

I recently saw a photo of Camila Alves and celeb-son Levi McConaughey playing at the park and smiled at the quaint shots of mom and son. After a few moments, I realized there was a man, with a telescopic camera, hiding in a bush somewhere nearby. Not sure about where you come from, but at my park, with my kids, a dude with a camera hiding in the bushes is not a welcome sight. We get out the pitchforks and torches.

Contrastingly, I note the Cruise-Holmes media machine taking great pride and care in presenting Suri for the cameras as the world’s youngest fashion model. Are they crafting her a celebrity image, or merely making the best of a situation they can’t control? Not sure. Personally, I do not equate the expectations of privacy at a children’s playground with those granted on the production set of a major motion picture.

Does the world owe these children some basic rules of privacy, or are they, by nature of their birth, as fair game as their celebrity parents? Certainly, a number of celebrity parents, moms especially, have withdrawn from the spotlight in order to provide a more off-camera life for their kids. Is retirement the only option? We’ve learned over time that assaulting paparazzi serves no purpose in this regard. Nor the ceremonial middle finger.

Where do you draw the line on celebrity children, or, do you at all?
