Coldplay: Viva La Plagiarism?

Jun 18, 2008 at 10:25am

Gwyneth Paltrow might want to hire hubby Chris Martin a copyright lawyer. The Coldplay frontman is being called out by a Brooklyn-based indie rock band for his new single’s extreme similarity to one of their songs.

Andrew Hoepfner of The Creaky Boards has posted a video on YouTube comparing Coldplay’s song “Viva La Vida” with the Boards song called (no, really) “The Songs I Didn’t Write.”

Hoepfner claims that he and his band performed their prophetically named song at the CMJ Music Festival in October of 2007. During the show, he says the band noticed that Martin appeared to be in the audience. Perhaps with some sort of recording device?

“We were flattered when we thought we spotted Chris Martin in the crowd that night. He seemed pretty into it! …Maybe TOO into it,” Hoepfner writes in his video’s text.

Coldplay’s spokesgroupie says that Hoepfner’s theory is impossible. He claims that demos for “Viva La Vida” were cut in March of 2007 and that Chris Martin was recording in London during the CMJ Festival.

Whatever the truth is, Hoepfner writes that he wishes the band “the best of luck” and that “if they ever want to collaborate, I’ve got some microphones we could use in my bedroom.”

No hard feelings there. What a great guy!
