If a young couple can stay in sync as they dip and twirl across a slippery dance floor in front of millions of Americans week after week, then surely that young couple has what it takes to make a relationship work.

Such must be the reasoning behind the announced wedding plans for Maksim Chmerkovskiy and Karina Smirnoff of Dancing With the Stars.  Maksim, 28, and Karina, 30, have been outed to People as a pair of hopeless romantics.

Sources say that, while in Las Vegas for New Year's Eve, Maksim bent his knee and begged his girlfriend of six months for her hand in marriage.  Until February, the professional dancers will be featured performers on the Dancing With the Stars winter tour. They are said to have spent their holiday break at the Wynn Hotel in Vegas.

Reps for both lovebirds have denied any wedding plans.

Smirnoff was famously dumped by dimple model Mario Lopez last year.  After the breakup, Karina was reduced to tears on television while discussing allegations that Lopez had been cheating on her for about a year with former Hooters calendar girl Meaghan Cooper.

Karina should have no such problems with Maksim.  Provided, of course, she doesn't develop a Jennifer Love Hewitt situation.
