Stan Lee’s Most Unforgettable Characters: The X-Men

With the Justice League and Fantastic Four flying off the shelves, Lee decided to come up with another group to get teenagers buying comic after comic. Thus, the X-men were born—Professor X, Cyclops, Iceman, Angel, and Beast. However, Lee admits to taking the easy way out when he created the X-men, specifically making them mutants so that he would not have to come up with individual back-stories for each character: “They were born that way,” he said. So, after consulting the drawing board, Lee decided on X-Men, since the group’s leader was called Professor Xavier.
