EXCLUSIVE: Rising Hollywood Pop Star Katie Welch Talks About Her Visual Album
Check out her new video right now!
CB: I want to talk about your album. It’s very unique because it’s a visual album. Can you tell us a bit about this and what makes it different from your average album?
Katie: I grew up dancing. When I hear music, I’m always moving, and so I really wanted to do something like this. It’s so expensive, and to think that I would ever have been able to do something like bring this to life without a lot of labels to court or anything… I brought the ideas to my friends, and everyone was like, ‘Let’s do it.’
So, all my friends got together and helped me make it happen. Living in L.A. you know some television people, really talented directors, videographers, and editors. Everyone truly just called every last favor they had, and we got it done. It was pretty magical when so many people come together like that.
CB: Tell us about your music videos.
Katie: So, the second video “Woven” is out now. I’m releasing them in reverse order. Then the whole visual album with the narrative will come out in March. When I finally got these songs down, we were able to tell this story that I wanted to really introduce myself with, because it’s not just like… it’s a love story, but it’s also very much like my relationship with the industry.
CB: What advice would you give to somebody who is wanting to do something like what you’re doing but just doesn’t know how to make that move?
Katie: Trial and error, and hard work, to be honest. We’ve definitely had to go back and redo some things or re-edit things. It took a lot longer than I wanted, and I totally thought we’d be able to plan this out, and I’d have it out last year. But it’s especially hard with not a lot of money, people kind of have to work on their own time.
Now it’s all happening. I think when you’re really honest with yourself and you really feel like you’re living your purpose, the entire universe conspires to help you. [I feel] really lucky about what happened for me. I just say keep at it. If you’re putting in all the work, the opportunities will present themselves.
CB: What made you decide ‘I’m doing this’?
Katie: I just had this a-ha moment — now or never. I was like “I can wait for all these opportunities to maybe eventually come to me someday or I can just grab the bull by the balls and try and do it myself.” I made the opportunity for myself, and what that lead to is me meeting even more well-connected producers. Now I’m working on a full album to come out after this to blend into each other. Everything kind of happened like a whirlwind, but it’s good.
CB: Talking about meeting all of these people in the film industry and music industry, you are pretty close with Sarah Hyland. How did you guys meet?
Katie: We just had the same group of friends. When I first moved here, I met a lot of young actors that live in the valley. We all know when you’re young, you want to hang out all the time with your friends. The real world hasn’t really settled in yet. […] that’s how we met. We’ve been friends ever since.
CB: So she’s a good support system in your career? Do you keep your friendships separate or do you like support each other in your work and participate in what you can to help build each other’s career?
Katie: We totally support each other at all times. Sarah’s worked since she was four years old; she knows the industry really well. She did Broadway for years, and she’s been able to give me a lot of incredible insight and just support. She’s like the foundation you build a house on. I feel really blessed to have such incredible friends that have my back and are willing to support me.
CB: Are you finding that like a lot of these opportunities arise just by you putting yourself out there and performing at gigs and catching their attention?
Katie: Absolutely. I perform at most of the jazz and Latin nights around town. When people kind of catch on to you, everybody wants you to do their night. I perform a lot all over L.A.
CB: What else can we expect from you in 2018? What’s next?
Katie: It’s going to be a big one. I mean we’ve got two more videos and the visual album coming out… and then more singles and like an 11-song album! I’m also working with another artist so we’re just like cranking it out.
