Here’s the REAL Reason ‘Sex and the City 3′ Is Not Happening
"It’s over… we’re not doing it."
No More Movies
Sorry, ladies! Sex and the City 3 isn’t happening and it’s all because of Samantha Jones.
Despite recent speculations that Warner Bros. is moving forward with the series’ third movie installment, it’s been confirmed that production on the highly anticipated film has been canceled indefinitely due to Kim Cattrall’s refusal to reprise her role on the silver screen.
The Daily Mail reported on Thursday that it was the 61-year-old’s “demands” that put a stop to the project, claiming she gave the studio an ultimatum and insisted the company produce other movies she had in development before signing onto the threequel. While the actress refuted reports she had made diva demands, she did confirm SATC 3 was shelved because of her.
“Woke 2 a @MailOnline [poop emoji]storm! The only ‘DEMAND’ I ever made was that I didn’t want to do a 3rd film….& that was back in 2016,” she tweeted.
According to insiders, studio execs didn’t believe a Sex and the City movie would work with just three of the four main leads on board. Sources said they would rather axe the project than to face the prospect of recasting.
End of an Era
The news came just hours after Sarah Jessica Parker, who played the iconic Carrie Brawshaw, revealed Sex and the City 3 was a no-go.
“It’s over… we’re not doing it,” she told Extra. “I’m disappointed. We had this beautiful, funny, heartbreaking, joyful, very relatable script and story. It’s not just disappointing that we don’t get to tell the story and have that experience, but more so for that audience that has been so vocal in wanting another movie.”
Kristin Davis echoed her co-star’s sentiments in a Facebook post Friday, saying she’s sadden that the movie will not happen despite the majority of the cast expressing interest in the script.
“I just wanted to say that I am so grateful for all of our beautiful fans for the love and support! I am sad and disappointed that we won’t be able to bring you all the final chapter of SATC,” she wrote. “Michael Patrick King wrote a beautiful script, that honored our characters and the entire history of the show. I haven’t quite gotten my mind around the fact that Charlotte will not continue on, but the wonderful part of what we do is that the show and movies will live on. So from the bottom of my heart, I am so grateful for the experience of being part of Sex and the City.”
“And to the fans,” she added, “know that we love you back.”
Naturally, fans were upset with news of the film’s cancellation. Singer Sia even offered to the step into Samantha’s “come-f*ck-me” heels if that’ll help resolve any recasting nightmare for the studio.
“Ok. @wbpictures can I just play Samantha and we give the people more sex and the city?” the “Chandelier” songstress wrote on Twitter. “We’ll just pretend I had lots of plastic surgery!”
While Kim’s holdout is disappointing, we can’t say we didn’t see it coming. In January, the former HBO star — who played the self-proclaimed “try-sexual” for six seasons and in two full-length feature films — told Entertainment Tonight she had no interest in coming back.
“I hate to be a spoilsport, but what would the next story be?” she argued. “Whether you liked it or not, the reality is, authentically — there were not alternative facts here! — there was backlash. The reality of what [a third movie] would be — there’s nothing concrete. There’s no script, there’s no idea.”
