She "didn’t have the knowledge," source says
Kim Kardashian isn’t afraid to tell it like it is. Just ask her former assistant Stephanie Shepherd.
The Keeping Up with the Kardashians star has fired her right hand woman after more than four years of working together. Though Steph has been by the reality mom’s side through thick and thin — including the birth of Kim’s two children and her harrowing Paris robbery last year — the longtime confidant is now being left in the dust as the KKW Beauty founder continues to the expand her empire.
As one source puts it, “Kim gave her the chance but after a short period of time it became clear that Stephanie just didn’t have the knowledge to take on a role like that.”
Kim Kardashian may be expanding her family, but she just lost one of her biggest confidants.
The 37-year-old reality star, who will welcome her third child — a girl — with husband Kanye West via surrogate soon, has severed professional ties with longtime assistant Stephanie Shepherd after more than four years of working together.
“Kim made a decision to let Stephanie go,” an insider tells People. The source continues:
“She was a good assistant but when Stephanie wanted to transition into a larger role with Kim’s brand and businesses, it just didn’t work. Kim gave her the chance but after a short period of time it became clear that Stephanie just didn’t have the knowledge to take on a role like that. Kim made an executive decision to part ways.”
The insider adds the former right hand woman is “still friendly with the other sisters but she and Kim aren’t really speaking.”
Too Close for Comfort
Stephanie, who’s been friends with the KKW Beauty founder since 2013, is often photographed jet-setting around the world with her boss. She’s even appeared in numerous episode of Keeping Up with the Kardashians, often helping out in the background and joining in on conversations with Kim and her sisters.
She was featured on a recent episode of the E! show when Kim questioned Stephanie’s close friendship with her sister Kourtney Kardashian.
“Do you find it weird that you’re like ‘wifey’ with my assistant?” Kim asked. “What if all of a sudden I became BFF with Megan? I think you would definitely be like, ‘That’s weird.’”
When Kourtney revealed Stephanie had confided in her about her job, Kim said she thought it was “inappropriate for [Steph] to talk to you” instead of her employer.
“I mean don’t you think that’s like a little bit unprofessional?” the star added.
Not a Glamourous Job
This May, Stephanie told Refinery 29 she had been promoted to the COO of Kardashian West Brands after spending years “doing her whole schedule, doing her laundry, booking travel, putting the stroller together and all of these things.” Having started out working for Kim when the mom-of-two was pregnant with her first child, Stephanie worked her way up from being the executive assistant.
“I think everyone thinks this job is super glamorous — and I can’t lie, it is. Truly, this family is so much fun, and we go to some amazing places and do some incredible things. But don’t forget that when you’re an assistant, with all of that glamour comes schlepping the bags and the suitcases and taking the fall when the car doesn’t show up or the flight is delayed or something goes wrong,” she told the publication, adding:
“I’ve f*cked up a lot. I’m only human. I get a lot of young girls asking me how to be a great assistant. I tell them three things. One is if you mess up, take responsibility and own it. I’ve f*cked up, I’m human. But I will just say, ‘I am so sorry, and I will fix this.’ Second, I say be resourceful. If your boss wants or needs something, you gotta do whatever it takes to make it happen. Don’t ask questions, just make it happen.”
“Lastly, I say take notes. Write. Sh*t. Down,” she said. “Even if you think you’re gonna remember it in your head, you’re not.”
