Are Oscars, art, and diamonds worth it?
There’s so much that goes on in the lives of celebrities that really blows minds when it gets found out by the public. While they like to claim that they really lead normal lives, their everyday existence is nothing like that of 95% of the population of Earth.
Celebrities are often lavished with gifts from other wealthy people and companies, and this time, it got a few famous people in serious trouble. You can bet that a normal person wouldn’t get caught up in an international embezzlement scheme involving movie deals, memorabilia, and priceless art.
Stranger Than Fiction
Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak is not a very popular politician. The people of Malaysia have protested him for years. They feel like he’s too corrupt to lead, and they’re right. Razak is now one of a few politicians named in a startling case of theft and money laundering that will go down in history.
Theft Most Foul
A handful of powerful people in Malaysia have been accused of stealing about $4.5 billion from 1MDB, a sovereign wealth fund that was supposed to improve the lives of the people of the country.
These thieves then used the huge amount of money to buy gifts for themselves, to fund businesses to launder the money, and to give gifts to celebrities around the world. Acting U.S. Attorney Sandra Brown stated, “These cases involve billions of dollars that should have been used to help the people of Malaysia, but instead was used by a small number of individuals to fuel their astonishing greed.”
Their “astonishing greed” didn’t stop with the people who stole it; they decided to get up close and personal with the most famous people on Earth by purchasing absurd, expensive, and priceless objects for them.
The celebrities who got gifts with the fund’s money are cooperating with the multiple investigations across the globe, but they may not be very happy about losing their ill-gotten property…
