“The Ultimate Gift” Selena Gomez’s Kidney Donor Shows Off Scar From Organ Transplant
Francia Raisa is on the mend.
The Ultimate Sacrifice
The Secret Life of the American Teenager star, who donated her kidney to the “Fetish” singer this summer, recently shared an update on her recovery following the life-saving surgery. Sharing a video of her at the gym, the 29-year-old wrote on Instagram she was “happy to be back” after being out of commission for months.
In the clip, the actress’ scar from the organ transplant can be seen as she lifts weights in a sports bra and grey leggings.
Journey to Recovery
As previously reported, the kidney transplant hit Francia the hardest, as she was bedridden following the operation. During the recovery process, she was prohibited from performing various forms of strenuous activities like cardio and dancing.
She was only recently allowed to practice yoga and light weightlifting.
Francia’s mother, Virginia Almendarez, told Telemundo’s Al Rojo Vivo following news of the kidney transplant that her daughter donated her organ in hopes of helping her BBF’s battle with lupus.
“They’ve been friends for many years. They’re like sisters. I love her a lot, too. She loves me a lot. She says I’m her mom,” she shared.
“Francia Raisa is an adult already, and she makes her own choices,” the matriarch said of the surgery. “She told me about it, and of course, at first, I was worried, but then she said that she had been thoroughly informed about everything and that she was going to do it. All I could do was support her.”
Back on Her Feet
Earlier this month, Selena thanked her longtime friend giving her the “ultimate gift” when none of her family qualified to be a donor.
“I’m very aware some of my fans had noticed I was laying low for part of the summer and questioning why I wasn’t promoting my new music, which I was extremely proud of. So I found out I needed to get a kidney transplant due to my Lupus and was recovering. It was what I needed to do for my overall health,” the 25-year-old songstress wrote on Instagram, sharing a photo of the two of them holding hands in their respective hospital beds.
“I honestly look forward to sharing with you, soon my journey through these past several months as I have always wanted to do with you,” she continued. “Until then I want to publicly thank my family and incredible team of doctors for everything they have done for me prior to and post-surgery. And finally, there aren’t words to describe how I can possibly thank my beautiful friend Francia Raisa. She gave me the ultimate gift and sacrifice by donating her kidney to me.”
“I am incredibly blessed. I love you so much sis,” she added. “Lupus continues to be very misunderstood but progress is being made.”
