GoopWatch: Paltrow talks Dad, Healthy Living

Oct 30, 2008 at 3:59pm

Gwyneth Paltrow has sent another Goop update, via her weekly newsletter covering all aspects of mind, body and the A-List soul.

This week Gwyn gets more intimate than ever discussing the maintenance of physical health and recalling the deterioration of her beloved father, Bruce Paltrow.

“In 1998, I was filming The Talented Mr. Ripley in Ischia, a little island off the coast of Naples in Italy,” Paltrow writes, “and I got a call that changed my life. My father had been diagnosed with throat cancer, and it was stage four. Although he underwent treatment and survived for another four years, I watched his health deteriorate slowly until his death in 2002.”

During this process, Paltrow studied eastern medicine and attempted to involve her father. While he enjoyed the spa-like perks of acupuncture, he couldn’t get on board the macrobiotic food bus.

For him, eating the stuff was like “biting into the New York Times,” the actress says.

Gwyneth goes on to offer advice for staying our healthiest from her three gurus—doctors she’s acquired in London, Los Angeles and New York.

And before you scoff at the Academy Award-winner consulting three physicians while she’s well, she has an answer for you.

“I had read somewhere that in Asia, the concept of going to the doctor when you were already sick was akin to digging a well when you were already thirsty. This struck a chord with me,” she said.

Us too, Gwyneth. Us too.
