Some style gurus are calling it the "superhero complex," others say it's an obsession with structure, I just think it's math-class mania: Many of the latest looks coming out of New York, Milan and the red carpet are strong and geometric. And designers including Cynthia Rowley, Armani, Marc Jacobs and Fendi are leading the charge with this powerful and sharp look.

Many models and celebrities are interpreting the trend in distinctive ways. Evangeline Lilly, for example, managed to look both soft and structured in her lovely, strapless, shiny champagne Emmy gown. Meanwhile Victoria Beckham and Jennifer Lopez took a near-literal approach wearing black-and-white, respectively. I for one felt the need (as usual) to glam up in my space-age, turquoise Mara Hoffman dress. It's strong and angular, but it's still me, wouldn't you say?

What, pray tell, do you do when you want to drop some geometry into your closet for a small sum? I have a great tip for you: Many high-end design houses nowadays also carry more affordable attire. Armani Exchange is a perfect example. But beware—the clothes there run really small. So be prepared to get a size or two above what you normally wear.

• Okay, so the fur bolero is more than $600, but the rest of these A|X jackets are totally reasonable and can add some angles to your wardrobe.

Aside from A|X, you can scan for structure at your local Macys, Nordstrom and even the Old Navy. Can you spot the structure in Old Navy's fall offerings? I can!
