Gwyneth Paltrow, 36, can finally sleep soundly again, safe in the knowledge that PETA has called off its hounds of wrath on her, Us Magazine reports.

The Goop-y thespian was targeted by the group after she posed wearing a fur stole in an ad for Italian designer Tod. At the time, the group released a statement reading, "Gwyneth Paltrow won't be the apple of her daughter's eye if she continues to flaunt fur." (Paltrow's four-year-old daughter with her husband, Coldplay frontman Chris Martin, 31, is named Apple. Very punny, PETA!)

The potential bloodbath was quelled over the weekend at the reopening of the Fountainbleu hotel in Miami.  Paltrow held a powwow with PETA senior vice president Dan Mathews.

Mathews claims that Gwynnie told him, "That was awkward, and I'm glad you asked, because I do not wear fur at all."

According to Mathews, Paltrow continued, "I didn't pay much attention to it, and when I noticed it was fur, I assumed it was fake fur, but did not ask, so it's my fault... I know it's not a great excuse, but I hope you and your members understand."

Whew; well, no need for pistols at dawn, then!

Besides, PETA should have known that their anger was misdirected. If there's any actress with a well-documented sympathy for the plight of animals, it's Gwyneth.
