Heidi and Spencer: We're Bankrupt 'Idiots'

After years of living the Hollywood lifestyle, Spencer Pratt and Heidi Montag are now left with nothing and have met with a bankruptcy attorney after blowing their $10 million reality television fortune.

In a Life & Style exclusive, the much-maligned duo say that constant overspending on houses, surgeries, Heidi's failed music career -- and yes, healing crystals -- led them down a financial waterfall that has now left their bank account totally dry. So dry, in fact, that they're now shacking up in Spencer's parents' house.

“We were immature, worrying too much about the famous part instead of the actual business part ... In hindsight, we shouldn’t have spent any of our money. We should have been low-key and saved. We spoke with a bankruptcy attorney and I’ve looked into unemployment checks," Spencer told Life & Style.

The couple say they now owe $2 million in taxes, which may cause them to file for bankruptcy.

How could this happen? According to Spencer, the Jersey Shore takeover quickly put an end to their Hills cash cow.

“We thought The Hills was going to be like 90210 and we’d have another five to 10 years,” Spencer says. “The ratings were consistent. But we never saw Jersey Shore coming. Before, TV audiences were fine with seeing us all argue, but now they want you to punch one another in the face and hook up with three different people. Our cast was a bit boring and snoozeworthy in comparison. No wonder we got canceled.”

Spencer once famously told David Letterman that he got a "minimum $100,000" for appearing at nightclubs during the height of his fame. He was subsequently mocked by the Late Show host, who called his claims "nonsense." Watch it below:

Heidi says that she considered posing naked for Playboy -- even after appearing in the magazine clothed -- in order to get some extra cash, but that Spencer's parents talked her out of it.

Nowadays, the duo are sleeping in the Pratt family's studio guesthouse, where Spencer's parents provide groceries for them each week. Spencer knows this was a self-inflicted wound, telling the magazine bluntly: “We don’t want sympathy ... We did this to ourselves and feel like idiots. But we’ve grown up and are definitely not as naive anymore.”
