While Oscar Gold will be bestowed upon a chosen few tomorow, Film Independent gave the little guys their kudos today, handing out their annual Spirit Awards.

Celebuzz snagged a seat backstage to witness (and Twitter!) the comings and goings of megawatt stars in small-scale films.

The likes of Cameron Diaz, Mickey Rourke, Penelope Cruz, Alec Baldwin and Jessica Alba showed to the tented awards broadcast on the beach in Santa Monica, CA.

The evening's big winners were Cruz for Vicky Cristina Barcelona and James Franco for Milk in supporting categories and Melissa Leo as Best Female Lead.

"It's going on my mantle," Leo told Celebuzz of the trophy, "I live in Loretta Divine's old house in Culver City, and she made a gorgeous mantelpiece...mosaic."

The biggest hit of the evening, however, was Best Male Lead winner Mickey Rourke. Undoubtedly the toast of the show, Rourke held court with a memorable acceptance speech featuring, among many things, the hospitality of the Santa Monica Police Department during his younger years.

"I asked [the cops] for two pillows, they told me to f--k off," Rourke said of spending a night with the law some time ago, "But anyway, thank you, Darren Aronofsky, for believing in me."

While Best Male Lead nominee and Milk star Sean Penn was absent, wife Robin Wright Penn stepped in should thank-yous need to be made. While the Penn family went home minus award, Wright Penn stopped through the Official Presenter's Gift Lounge.

She scored Glowelle products, a sweet Sprint phone and even a bra and panties set from B.Tempt'd. At least Sean is a winner in other ways.
