Jay-Z: I Would Have Robbed Chris Martin Growing Up
Jay-Z and Coldplay’s Chris Martin are the best of friends, but that wouldn’t have been the case if Jay met Chris back when he was a teen.
In an interview with UK’s The Mirror, Jay (born Shawn Carter) explains that although he is friendly with Chris and his wife Gwyneth Paltrow now, back during his hustling days:
That’s a different scenario. He couldn’t walk through [the Marcy projects]. I was a different person then. I wasn’t open to the world and to cultures. I would have been, ‘Yo! Who are you? Give me your money.’ You couldn’t have a guy like Chris walking through Marcy. He’d have to get robbed. At best.
Luckily, things are different now and Jay and his wife Beyonce take joint vacations with Chris and his family. Chris and Gwen were both present at Jay and Bey’s ultra-private wedding in 2008.
Jay even hints that Chris and Gwen’s friendship may have inspired him to start a family of his own. “They are a really cool family with beautiful kids, who happen to be good at the jobs they do,” said Hova. When asked if he would like to have the same thing as Chris, Jay responded, “Kids? Of course.”
