Most Hollywood actresses would be all too happy to shed a few extra pounds. Not Jennifer Connelly.

Connelly's physique has been the source of much scrutiny lately, due to a seemingly dramatic weight loss that the 38-year-old, formerly curvaceous actress has experienced.

OK! Magazine reports that the slimming down is the result of the death of Jennifer's father.

Connelly's husband, British actor Paul Bettany, was on hand at the Palm Springs International Film Festival Tuesday night to present Dakota Fanning—his co-star in The Secret Life of Bees—with the Rising Star Award. When questioned about the reason for his wife's recent weight loss, the 37-year-old actor replied, "I will tell you... My wife just lost her father."

Connelly's father, former clothing manufacturer Gerard Connelly, passed away in September.

Connelly is currently appearing onscreen in both Revolutionary Road and The Day the Earth Stood Still.

She plays a pivotal pivotal role in He's Just Not That Into You, due out in February.  In trailers for the romantic comedy, also starring Jennifer Aniston and Drew Barrymore, Connelly's profile does appear to be slimmed down from her early days in such films as 1990's The Hot Spot and The Rocketeer from 1991.

Jennifer did not join her husband at the Palm Springs event.
