Ghost Whisperer star Jennifer Love Hewitt is no doubt feeling a bit, uh, down-spirited at the onset of the new year.

Despite being photographed together less than a month ago while chowing down on fast food, she and fiancé Ross McCall have apparently broken up.

Hewitt, 29, began dating Scottish Band of Brothers actor McCall, 32, in 2005. The pair became engaged in November 2007.

"They broke up over the holidays and have ended their engagement," a source close to the pair has told People. "They're both really sad about this. Even their friends are surprised; they seemed really happy. Everyone just wants the best for both of them."

McCall is currently starring in the first season of the Starz series Crash, which is adapted from the Oscar-winning 2005 film of the same name.

Hewitt's Friday night CBS fantasy-drama The Ghost Whisperer is in the midst of its fourth season.

Hopefully their relationship woes aren't a harbinger of doom for Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt; Jennifer and Ross dressed up as the real-life Mr. & Mrs. Smith lovers for Halloween.
