Jessica Simpson isn’t known for giving up easily. But the actress/singer admits to E! Online that she thought about hanging up the microphone after she botched the lyrics to “9 to 5″ during a Kennedy Center Tribute to the song’s authoress, Dolly Parton.

“I really thought I was done singin’,” Simpson, whose country album, Do You Know, is set for release September 9, confesses. “I’d lost a lot of confidence and I didn’t even know who I was.

“But Dolly totally took me under her wing and helped me up and over the cares of the world…I do owe a lot of my confidence to her.”

Given the reaction that Simpson’s revamped music career has received so far, country fans might start burning Dolly in effigy. But they can’t really blame her—being sweet is just in Parton’s nature.

And with the spirit of Dolly running through her, Simpson will no doubt never botch a song again. Oh, wait. Nevermind…
