It's a common sacrifice for great screen beauties to trade glamour for serious acting cred, a la Nicole Kidman in The Hours and Charlize Theron in Monster.

Celebuzz wonders, however, exactly what Jessica Alba is after with this horribly puzzling look from her upcoming film An Invisible Sign of My Own.

She plays a math teacher, which almost seems to explain the bucket hat, excruciatingly patterned raincoat and (shiver!) pastel/lattice messenger bag.

While we certainly hope Alba can finally churn out a performance that critics respect, this getup might make audiences want to steal her pencil and shove it in their Eye.

    Omg. she looks so different there. i think she is so petty, she looks better wif her hair lighter though but i still luv her!
