Joaquin Phoenix made an appearance Monday night at the Paul Newman benefit  and told Extra that he was through making movies.

Joaquin, say it ain't so! You were so good in Walk the Line!

"I want to take this opportunity...also to give you the exclusive and just talk a little bit about the fact that this will be my last performance as an actor...I'm not doing films anymore," Joaquin said about his upcoming role in Two Lovers with Gwyneth Paltrow.

"Yeah. I'm working on my music. I'm done. I've been through that," Phoenix said.

Joaquin was reportedly being followed by his own camera crew at the event, so could this be a Borat-type situation?

His friend and fellow actor Casey Affleck confirmed Phoenix's dramatic announcement, though.

"I don't think he's kidding. He's got music and stuff."

And Joaquin's rep responded to queries with, "That's what he told me."

Working with Gwyneth Paltrow can make anyone rethink their life goals.
