Kanye West Opens Up About His Deceased Mother
For once, Kanye West is opening his mouth to do something besides make a pompous jackass of himself.
The 808s & Heartbreak rapper sat down with Essence Magazine to discuss, among other things, the effect that the death of his mother, Donda West, has had on his life. (The elder West died in November 2007 following complications from plastic surgery.)
West notes that he’s using his charitable organization, the Kanye West Foundation, in part to carry on his mother’s legacy. The foundation, which promotes continued education among youth, has just launched its inaugural program, Loop Dreams, in South Central Los Angeles, teaches school children studio engineering skills, among other things.
The occasionally volatile musician adds that his mother, who worked in higher education for 31 years, stressed the importance of expanding one’s horizons to him from an early age.
“My mom instilled that in me when she took me to China with her for a year,” West notes. “I was in the fifth grade and I know she prepped me for my many journeys to come. My mom was an educator so she brought that kind of knowledge and instilled it in me. Now, I’m keeping her dream alive through the foundation to take it to the next level.”
Good for you, Kanye! While you’re at it, you might want to teach the kiddies how important it is to keep their anger in check too.
