Kanye West: The True Star of the Emmys?
Kanye West‘s impact at the MTV Video Music Awards last week was so profound that he might have been the most entertaining aspect of this year’s Emmy Awards—even though he wasn’t in attendance.
In a generally subdued ceremony, references to the acceptance-speech-interrupting rapper were numerous, providing some of the evening’s arguably sparse highlights.
There was host Neil Patrick Harris‘ jab at West in his show-opening monologue (“I hope Kanye West likes 30 Rock“). And Grey Gardens‘ Ken Howard expressing relief that his acceptance speech wasn’t being interrupted by any Congressmen (a reference to South Carolina Rep. Joe Wilson) or rappers. And Justin Timberlake‘s questionable Kanye impression. Even Jimmy Fallon‘s autotune-spoofing, slapstick presentation brought the 808s & Heartbreak rapper to mind.
It was almost as if they were hoping that West would burst into the Nokia Theatre and inject some life into the proceedings.
Which brings us to our big question of the evening…

Ugh, I think that we’re all giving Kanye exactly what he wants by showering him with all this attention! Fame whores like him don’t care what kind of publicity they get, as long as it’s publicity. A harder blow to him would be everyone ignoring what he did, but it’s obviously too late for that now.
