Kate Winslet: Suck It Up, Meryl Streep!

Kate Winslet: Suck It Up, Meryl Streep!-photo

Enthusiasm personified Kate Winslet who won her first Oscar for Best Actress for her role as a German trolley conducter with a shadowy past in The Reader.

Kate, who has been villified in the past for her rambling acceptance speeches, kept this one to a restrained joy -- talking about how she had practiced her speech as a child.

Winslet even compared her Oscar to the "shampoo bottle" she used to hold in front of the bathroom mirror when she acted it out as a kid.

Kate's Oscar was presented to her by a bevy of former Best Actress Oscar winners - including Nicole Kidman, Sophia Loren, Shirley MacLaine, Halle Berry and last year's winner Marion Cotillard.

The British actress (who is married to her Revolutionary Road director Sam Mendes) seemed to delight her competitors in the category with her speech including Meryl Streep and Angelina Jolie.

Winslet even got cheeky as she wrapped things up.

She noted that all of the Best Actress nominees were floored by being in the same category as the 15-times nominated Streep. But then told Meryl to get over losing and to "suck it up!"

I wish the press could stop making up all this complete utter bollox. Kate told meryl to 'suck it up' for not accepting Kate's compliment for merylStreep's greatness, I'm sure even meryl knew that. The press needs to stop being so selfish to Kate. Just because she's British, and they only want there own nationality to win dosent mean they have to make untrue stories about British stars and make the American look innocent, just because they want everyone to hate on outsiders to there country. I wish they could stop this.

Kate Winslet did not insult Meryl Streep. The reverence she has for Meryl is quite obvious. Meryl has equally shown her admiration for the talent women actors are now portraying considering the male dominated arena with which they must contend. Meryl Streep has promoted many talented actresses in her own acceptance speeches as well as her desire for change from the old paradigms that she and her predecessors have been subjected. Meryl is a Goddess (as are the others) and Kate Winslet justifiably stated that fact despite knowing Meryl's objections to being glorified to the level of greatness. And to that, Kate was referring when she made the comment "suck it up."

She didn't bloody mean it like that! I mean, I didn't want her to win but I know she didn't insult Meryl Streep!! Kate is good, maybe one of the greatest, but she's not Meryl Streep. Doubt could've easily been Streep's last leading role, she should've one. It was a phenomenal performance.

I'm Italian, not a native speaker, but I think she completely lacked style saying those words to a real goddess like Meryl. If I were her, I would have cruhed her with Miranda Priestley eyes just to say:"Try to repeat that, sort of an english parvenue..."

Not sure if you're a native English speaker, but Ms. Winslet told Ms. Streep to "suck it up" in regards to the compliment she had just paid her on behalf of the other actresses in the category. It's always amazing to see the press try to make ridiculous interpretations of things.
