Easter and the 96th Anniversary of the Armenian Genocide

The following is an Appeal from the Religious Leaders of the Armenian Apostolic Church, Armenian Catholic Church and the Armenian Evangelical Union of North America:

In April of this year, the Armenian people will mark two very important days in history; Easter and the 96th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide. While the Armenian Genocide is one of the darkest days of modern history, Easter is one of the brightest in the history of mankind. This year, in a rare coincidence and for the first time since the Genocide, both of these days will fall on April 24th.

As Christians, on April 24th we will celebrate the Glorious Resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and the salvation of mankind. On that same day, as Armenians, we will commemorate the rebirth of our people from the ashes of merciless genocide. We will mark our resurrection as a people from the persecution that nearly consumed us a century ago. With our survival, we, the sons and daughters of our ancient nation, behold and honor the visionary spirit and the undying legacy of our martyrs.

As children of the first nation to adopt Christianity as a state religion, on this Holy Day of Easter, we call upon our Christian brothers and sisters as well as people of all faiths to pray with us for the two million Armenians, Assyrians, Chaldeans, Syriacs, Pontians, and Greeks, who fell victim to the Ottoman Empire's World War I-era genocide of its Christian minorities, and for justice and peace to prevail in our world.

I CANNOT EVEN BEGIN TO TELL YOU HOW WONDERFUL IT IS TO KNOW THAT YOU ARE PROUD TO BE ARMENIAN. THIS MESSAGE BROUGHT TEARS TO MY EYES. IT WAS SUCH A HORRIFIC TIME IN OUR HISTORY THAT STILL HAS NOT BEEN GIVEN ITS RIGHTFUL RECOGNITION. KOURTNEY, IF YOU, KIM, KHLOE, AND ROB WERE TO JOIN US IN PROTEST ON APRIL 24TH 2010, IT WOULD MEAN THE WORLD TO THE ARMENIAN COMMUNITY. IT WOULD HELP SO MUCH IF THE KARDASHIANS WOULD SUPPORT THE CAUSE AND THE MEDIA WOULD SPEND MORE THAN 2 MINUTES TO TALK ABOUT IT AND THEN PRETEND LIKE IT NEVER HAPPENED. 2010 WILL BE THE 95TH YEAR OF REMEMBERING THE GENOCIDE. I HOPE YOU CAN HELP US =)

Kourtney,
Thank you...It is even sad that I would have to say Thank You, sad because the Genocide should have never happened. Sad that most people don't even know what it is, Sad that the government and schools do not recognize that it happened, Sad that Turkey can live on as if they are perfect people. But thankful that a young beautiful girl like yourself who is in the spotlight would stand up and make a strong statement because you truly care. My great-grandpa and grandma were the first generation here as their siblings were born in Armenia right before the genocide. As a full Armenian myself, I was always irritated when April 24th would roll around and I would talk about the day and other people didn't even know it was of any importance. We grew up knowing it was a sad day, and a sad period that we as a culture would never get back, and we still hold on to hope that someday it will be recognized. But again Thank You, because when people stand up for it who are well know, it makes people listen. :)

I must say I have great respect for you recognizing the struggle of your culture. Sometimes as human beings we can be so swept up in what we know as reality here in the states that we don't recognize the reality of those less fortunate. I salute you for your ability to recognize and bring to light the suffering of mankind. Thank you!
