Hey dolls, I wanted to share this week’s blog I did for People.com’s Moms and Babies. Last week I wrote about Mason’s first traveling experience and this week I wanted to talk about my experiences breast feeding.
Each mother has her own personal view about breast feeding. Some choose not to do at all, while others, like myself, are all about it. For me it just felt like the right thing to do, and has been the most amazing bonding experience.
Mason is now six months old and has only been fed breast milk up until this week! I just started incorporating solid foods into his diet. We began with a mixture of rice cereal, oatmeal cereal and mixed grain cereal with some breast milk added. When I introduced it to him, he seemed confused — but ready and excited for it!
I still want to continue breastfeeding for maybe another six months or as long as Mason still wants it. I’ve heard that some babies just get over it and stop nursing. But personally, I’m still loving it. I love the bonding time, love that it’s natural and what your body is made to do, love the benefits for his body and mine. I find it to be such an amazing womanly thing.
When reading the comments from last week’s blog I came across this one: “Nice article! I just wondered why you bring a bottle of fresh breast milk? I avoid nursing in public (NIP) whenever possible, but when I do, I wear a nursing cover and try my best to cover myself. It is so much easier than bringing a bottle and pumping.“
Read the rest of my blog about breastfeeding here!
The answer is, I actually do nurse on takeoff and landing while traveling. But I bring the bottle for emergencies and for the milk in the nose trick. I’ve nursed Mason while shopping in the shoe section at Neiman Marcus, in dressing rooms, in my car, wherever I need to.
I know that for me, I need to try to cover myself while breastfeeding so that no one snaps a picture. If this wasn’t the case, I probably wouldn’t mind as much because my son is my biggest concern. My attitude is, if someone sees a little somethin’ somethin’, don’t look if you don’t like it.
My sister, Kim, was just at a restaurant where a woman was breastfeeding her toddler and had both breasts exposed. Kim Tweeted about it and got some very nasty responses from people. She also said that the woman was changing the baby at the table with food everywhere.
People always have something to say about how long is too long or not long enough to breastfeed. I think this is such a personal decision that it can only be made between each baby and his or her mommy.
As for me, I take my cues from Mason and together we’ll take it from there!

Kourtney, first of all congratulations to you and your family. Motherhood is a gift like no other. I too had my first child in December, and it is such a joy and a blessing. I think it is great that you have chosen to breastfeed Mason, but comments like (paraphrased) “I would hate to have to give him formula” or “I would die if I had to give him formula” (I can’t remember exactly how you said it, just that it stung) are very hurtful to those of us who have to give our babies formula, by necessity. I was in the hospital numerous times during the first few months of my child’s life. I had chosen to breastfeed and was very well-educated (had a lactation consultant and tons of support) but my baby had issues with colic, comfort-nursing and not properly draining the breast – I ended up with mastitis 5 times, no matter what I did, and I was on i.v. vancomycin as the infection became resistant to all of the other antibiotics. I had abscesses that had to be drained by needle aspiration (I refused incision and drainage) and I was, as a result, extremely depressed at the time. Although “breast is best”, formula is by NO MEANS evil, and my daughter is thriving on it. Please be sensitive to other mothers out there. For some of us, nursing is NOT the most natural thing in the world. And Tijana, you claim to be well-educated but you’re just SO ignorant… your comments don’t deserve a response.
Hey Kourtney,
I also had a baby this year, she is 3 months old. I am also a pro breastfeeder. I love the bonding experience I have with my baby girl and the benefits it has for both mother and child.
Kuddos to you for keeping up with it.
take care!
The bra that Kourtney is wearing is called the Easy Expression Bustier Hands-Free Pumping Bra. Hope that helps!!
Thank you Beverly! I need one myself! The one I used with my first was a hand held set and it causes bad posture and doesn’t give good support for the breasts. Thanks Kourtney for exhibiting the breast pump on tv, now I’ve got to have it for my new little one soon.
hi kourtney i just wanted to say that i love your views on breast feeding.Im a young mother of two and well i didn’t breast feed my first born because i was shy but with my second i was all for trying it out unfortunatly for me he was born two months early so i am using a breast pump.well any ways i was wondering do you do both or do you mostly breast feed?and i wanted to say i think your a wonderful mother and are so pretty.keep up all good work
what kind of breast pump do you use???
HI Kourt
i have a 2 mth old baby boy and everytime i start breastfeeding him he starts crying and he doesnt want it he just started doing this. I still want to keep breastfeeding do you have any advices? can u please let me know what pump you use?
Hi Kourt.
I have to say this about breast feeding…
I have a 4 month old. She is not breast fed, she is formula fed, and I am okay with that. I am unable to breast feed do to medical reasons, and I can not go off my medication to breastfeed. My daughter is perfectly healthy and happy, and we are completely bonded. I feel there are some mothers who either unintentionally or intentionally put guilt on mothers who do not – or in my case, CAN NOT – breast feed their children.
Certain doctors/midwives/nurses and uber breastfeeding advocates demonize formula, but my daughter is THRIVING. She is just as “GOOD” as a breastfed baby.
I certainly support your decision, but for every different mother there is a different method that is right for their child.
Breastfed babies and Formula babies are both healthy, and bonded with their mother.
Hey Kourtney!
First of all you’re my absolute favorite Kardashian. And I know a lot of people are against you and Scott but…I’m totally for you two. (you’re the “Ross and Rachel” as far as my view point.
You’re my fav b/c I can relate to you in some ways. I have a husband named Scott first of all. He is younger than me. We seem to bicker over the same things you and Scott on your show. We have two kids, a boy Ethan who is 7 and a baby girl named Molly age 1 year. And even though Molly has turned one (just 2 weeks ago) I am still breast feeding. It’s also somewhat of a dedication to do this for your child but its so worth it. Hope you read this.
hi kourtney,
i am a mother to be and i am concerned about how my implants were done. I want to breastfeed my baby but my implants were inserted through the areola (nipple). I know you did not have any trouble and I guess every situation is different, but did you happen to have your implants done through the areola?sorry for getting so personal but I am in a panic. non of my friends have implants. I am going to call the doctor to ask him my chances of successfull nursing but maybe you can answer me faster!
Thank you so much God Bless you and your family,
I’m all for breastfeeding, dont get me wrong. But sometimes it just doesnt work the way it’s supposed to.
With my first born, i was happy over the moon when I latched her on for the first time, she was like a fish in the water and did it perfectly. Happy as can be. Then on the third day, she wasn’t doing so well, she was very dehydrated and constantly crying and looking for a feed. So I started expressing and we found out that I didnt have any milk coming out at all and that my beautiful baby girl was starving. The nurse gave her a bottle and she drank it in one go and wanted more. I couldnt feed her. The hospital was pressuring me to keep at it, but I made the decision not to and switch to bottles. They told me I would have a lot of pain for 2 weeks in my breasts, but i never had that pain. Simply said, my breasts weren’t made for feeding. I cried all day and felt a horrible mum. But looking back it was the best decision I’ve made, because it took away a lot of stress and pain.
I do agree that there are a lot of positive things to be said about breastfeeding. But Millions of people grew up with bottle feed and they’re just fine (not any sicker or dumber then any other person). Stating that a baby is smarter due to breastfeeding is a bit shortsighted, or that the baby is healthier. My baby girl is 2 now, in her short life she has never been sick, sure she has had a cold, but nothing major. She’s 2 years old now and she’s the smartest little girl in the world.
My point is, eventhough people are pro breastfeeding, try not to pressure other mammies (especially first time mammies) in breastfeeding, it is a personal choice and nobody should have to explain what they have chosen to do with their own children. I always advise other mammies to start with breastfeeding and see how it works out for them. I dont go around telling them that their children will be sick and dumb and that they’re bad mammies because they didnt even try.
Sorry about the rant, please know this is not critiscism to you Kourtney, I think you’re doing great with Mason and I love watching your shows and seeing Mason grow up in a fine young boy. But I had to comment to this.
Hi Kourtney, its so great to have a Celeb that is breastfeeding and proud! Your being such a great role model to so many Mums and I hope that you continue to breastfeed and enjoy it like me! Its a shame that you have to cover up so much incase someone snaps a pic but hopefully one day it will be so common the breastfeed in public that noone will care! I don’t know if you already are as I’m in the UK but you should team up with a charity and help inform others about the importance of breastfeeding. love you lots x
Hi Kourtney,I was writing to say how cute Mason is an how much I love your show,I couldn’t watch it for a while because I would cry everytime I heard the name Khloe. My 8 an a half month old daughter passed away a little over a year ago an I named her KHloe London I spelled it like your sisters on purpose because I love your show an got the idea of using k instead of c.Enjoy every moment with your son an never take him for granted I miss my baby SOOO much it hurts so bad me an my husband are trying to save up 6200 for a tubal reversal so maybe we can enjoy a baby once more,we miss changing diapers an stuff.I am so lost without her. That is awesome how big your son is getting you are so lucky to have him!I wish I could of saw what my babygirl would be like older.Much love to you an your family,an if you love Scott I say do whats right for you an Mason not anyone else its your life! xoxo doll-Brystarr
Hi Kourtney,
I just had our baby a little over a week ago and breastfeeding is going well. I really appreciate the determination and dedication you have for feeding your son. I was not planning on breastfeeding my daughter but had a change of heart and now I realize I have made the right decision. Because I am going back to work at such an early stage; I am going to be sending breastmilk with her during the day and then I plan to start making food for her around the 6 month mark. Premade baby food with a 2 year expiration date on the jar is beyond disgusting to think about! I know you have started introducing solid food to your son. Do you have favorite recipes, etc? I am going to use the Beaba baby food maker. Have you had any experience with it? I have the cookbook and the recipes look amazing but just wondered if you had an expererience with baby food maker itself? I don’t know anyone else that is making their own food; and I would love to get feedback if you have any.
Best wishes to you and have a wonderful day! shannon
Hey Kourtney
I just saw you all on the Rachel Ray show & you all look beautiful! I have a 7 month old son and I knew you would still be breastfeeding as am I as well. I agree with you 100% i absolutely love it. I love the bonding time and its so natural and what women who are willing, are suppose to do.I too want to do it for a whole year if not a little longer, i must admit i think it will upset me more to stop then my son, Anthony Jr.(A.J.) I too just started at 6 months to introduce food, i am still introducing it now at 7 months, my son isnt so excited for it yet, he is still pretty much living on breastmilk, but i try everyday! Mixing cereal with breastmilk and even putting food with it. Its nice to get advise from a mother who is still breastfeeding b.c. its a whole different ball game than formula. Anyways if you have any tips let me know! God Bless your family and beautiful Mason.
Michelle
Hi there! I wanted to know what the name of the breast pump was that you used? Thank you.
Kourtney,
What an awesome mama you are!! It’s so great to have someone so admired by many setting such a WONDERFUL example for other moms. Seriously, many moms will choose to breastfeed because you do, and how many cancers / illnesses will that prevent? You’re making a huge impact! Kudos, girl!!!
I’m still nursing my 14 mo. old. Not many people nurse so long around here, and I get a lot of remarks and grief about it, but I just do my best to educate others and encourage them to choose what’s absolutely a superior food for their babies.
Thank you, thank you for doing such a wonderful thing for your son and our society!
hi kourt, i dont know if you are allowed to say what kind of breast pump u use i just figured i would take a shot. i am expecting a baby boy soon and i would like to breast feed but wanted some ideas of the best pumps thanks
I think you are a dynamite lady. I hope you have time to listen…I just wanted to make a suggestion. I have been watching this season — I realize it was probably done during the summer, but I wanted to make a suggestion — I think the stripes are really overdone. Every episode I see one, two, three of a bunch of you are wearing a striped shirt or shorts? It is a little overdone and obvious. You may want to make sure everyone is not wearing the same theme. Thanks for listening.
Hey!
Just wanted to let you know that I think your views on breastfeeding are sooo healthy! I breast fed my gorgeous little girl for 2 years! I know that may sound a little long but for the last 6 months it was only if she was upset or sick. It was something my daughter needed and who was I to say it was wrong! I agree that it is such an amazing bonding experience. It is something that only YOU get to do with your child and I felt really honoured to do so.
So a big congrats on putting it out there into the world that it is completely normal and beautiful thing to do for mums (I live in New Zealand hence the spelling) and their babies.
Hey, I think its really great to hear that you’ve got such a level head about the benefits of breastfeeding for Mason and yourself! The UN World Health Organisation actually recommends that babies are breastfeed until their 2. But like you said, its completely up to the mum and baby. And personally I don’t understand the big taboo about feeding in public, people are exposed to provocative and overly sexualised women in media everyday, whether it be through adverts, music videos, movies etc. But the most natural act of breastfeeding if done in public is shamed upon!
If they don’t like it, tell THEM to put a blanket over THEIR head!!
Hey Courtney! You wrote this article in June, soon Mason is turning 1. How is it with breastfeeding? Do you breastfeed him by his demand or do you just follow the regime?
hey from united arab emirates
i love your show and find you the most interesting person on it
. i recently had my baby mohammad, he is ten days today
i am loving breast feeding !! at first i was unsure and lost but practice makes perfect!
i saw your birth video too and thought wow!! i am so gonna do that! natural all the way but my baby was in stress n had to have a c section. you r truely an inspiration.. being in the lime light.. doing a show.. n being a business woman doesnt take you away from being a fantastic mom! you go girl!
Hey kourtney!!! I have a 10month old baby…he was actually born Dec. 17 just a few days after Mason…I followed your pregnancy and I was experiencing MINE!
Of course I also watched the episode where you gave birth to Mason and I got teary eyed remembering when my little Adrian was born. It’s such an amazing experience that only us mothers can comprehend…well Ive been struggling with my weight lately…i mean overall, im skinny and i love my weight 120 pounds…i just want to tone my stomach a little bit more, my arms, and thighs…i just want to feel sexy again…i always look through the magazines and look at your body and you look AMAZING!!! I was wondering if you could give me some tips as to what youve done to look so great!!! thanks for being such a positive role model for all mommies!! I look up to you!
xoxo
what kind of breastpump did you use? iam 3 months pregnant and would love to breast feed please respond back i would really want to hear back from you THANKS:)
I’m so glad there are still some people in the spot light that don’t care what the press has to say about what is or isn’t best for their child. I Breastfed both of my son’s for the first year and wouldn’t have it any other way. My boys, Skyler and Braden, are healthy happy little boys and that’s what matters. Not to mention I don’t know it I would have made it through the 3 a.m. feedings if it wasn’t for co-sleeping and breastfeeding. It made for a much happier mommy and even happier babies. I never had to have someone come up to me and ask me can’t you clam your child down. My kids we easily contented and very happy boys. Good for you and Mason!!!!
My daughter just turned one about 4 weeks ago. I breastfed 5 times a day up until recently. She only feeds 3x a day now. I love every minute of it. I have to cut her down because I’m finally going back to school for my Ph.D. She drinks water more than cow’s milk though.
Hi. I am expecting my baby in January and sooo looking forward to breastfeeding. However I had breast augmentation at my areola but under the muscle. Where was ur incision? Just looking for opinions on my chances of being able to breast feed. Still will prepare some homemade organic baby formula just in case. And I plan to use the breast pump to help stimulate the milk production. Thanks for your input on breastfeeding.
Hi! I saw you in Parenting magazine and wanted to thank you for being so honest about motherhood. I am still nursing my 18 month old daughter and she still sleeps with us at night. I wouldn’t change a thing and it definitely makes her happier and more confident as a human being.
Enjoy every minute of it!
Hi Kourtney.
My daughter is 6 1/2 months pregnant. Excited as can be.
I loved the breat pump you used. Can you please advise me where I can
purchase one.
Thanks,
Priscilla
Kourtney, what brand is that hands-free breast pumping bustier I saw you using in one of the miami episodes? I have a 6 week old baby boy, breast feeding is going great, I especially love the bonding with him. Could use any help to make pumping easier and that bustier you were wearing looks like a must have. Thanks in advance, Mary
Hey Kourtney,
This doesnt have to do with the breast feeding, which is great by the way because its so good for his immune system, but the reason why i am writing this comment is to suggest to you, and your family, to start driving hybrid vehicles. Seeing as you guys are SUCH influential people and so many people follow you and look up to you. I think it would be a great way to give the message that you guys care about the environment and it would definitly reduce your carbon footprint. You guys do a lot of flying and traveling in cars and by driving hybrids you will be sending a message and having other people consider it as well, thereby reducing your carbon footprint because you will be the “catalyst” that will help others also consider buying hybrids. PLEASE PLEASE consider. Im not suggesting buying a prius but there are a lot of really nice cars that are hybrids. Mercedes has some hybrids and even a escalade hybrid would be a great approach. I hope you read this and will consider it.
Thanks for being YOU
Its SO nice to read positive comments about breast feeding from someone in the eye of the media.
Kourt, I think your views on breastfeeding are awesome. My daughter is 2 and a half years old and I still breast feed her when she get’s hurt, when I’m putting her down for a nap and putting her to sleep for the night. It’s comforting for her and our time to bond. People give me grief about it but I could care less. It’s between my daughter and I. My son weened himself when he was ready. It was right around when he was 3. And towards the end for him it was just for comfort. I imagine my daughter will be the same.
I just want to say i love all you guys but Miss Kourtney ….what to say your great with your child life and business ..Watch the shows all the time ..you and scott should but then again thats what I think sets you aside you seem to be well grounded just love you wish to meet you some day:) Oh my 3 daughters love your show to my 7 yr old is such a diva lol loves fashion..well off to sears to see this new collection!!
I think its fantastic the publicity that you give breast feeding I bf my daughter and I love it and would like to feed as long as possible still she weans herself. I hate how much public opinion thinks its perverse or attention seaking. I belive in discretion when feeding and thank you for being a public figure with such a positive attitude
hey Kourt, thanks for being a good role model. am enjoying breastfeeding as well but was betting about when to stop. Am glad to have come across your opinion about it. Much love from Uganda (Africa).
Kourtney, you have amazing views on this, sharing your experiences and views will hopefully inspire other young women to breastfeed, and take away some of the stigma about it. As a midwife in New Zealand, we have very open views about b/fing and I think you are doing a fabulous job nurturing your boy. xx
Kourtney, I feel EXACTLY the way you do about breast feeding. My baby girl is 5 months old and we are actually relocating to LA for my husbands job next week. She is exclusively breast fed and some people give me crap about it but we have such a good thing going and I know it’s so good for both of us. We flew to and from NYC last week and nursed on the plane for the first time. It wasn’t so bad and like you said, if people don’t want to see it, they shouldn’t look lol! Moms my age 25-30 seem very split opinion wise about breast feeding, so thanks for writing this and maybe inspiring some to give it a try…!
Hi Kourtney,
I love watching you with Mason on the show and love the fact that you co-sleep and breastfeed but I was just wondering if your circumcised him.
