Lindsay Lohan and Samantha Ronson's relationship has been a volatile one. Despite their professed affection for each other, the actress/DJ couple's love boat has been rocked more than once by waves of tension.

And now, perhaps, the world can understand why.

Exhibits A-H: These surveillance photos of Lohan, 22, and Ronson, 31, at a Washington, D.C., nightclub, where Ronson was performing a DJ gig.

Sure, there are moments of tender bliss. Unfortunately, there are also moments of Lindsay slipping into the spirit of things, so to speak.

Keen minds will recall that, while heading to the gig on a New York-to-D.C. train, Linds and Sam were spotted engaging in an explosive brawl.

On that same train trip, Ronson was spotted with a pharmacy's worth of prescription pills in her handbag.

Are the couple locked in a cycle of pill-fueled arguments, followed by boozy reconciliations?

Goodness knows, they wouldn't be the first couple to fall into such a self-destructive habit.

Here's hoping that Linds and Sam can rein in their appetite for dysfunction and seek the help they need.
