Lindsay Lohan's Downward Spiral: Are Her Doctors to Blame?
Cut Lindsay Lohan some slack—the medical community might be just as much to blame for her recent troubles as she is.
According to TMZ, Lohan—who's currently undergoing rehab treatment at the UCLA Medical Center—was prescribed the psychostimulant Adderall because she'd been misdiagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, and the unnecessary medication could have significantly affected her behavior.
Los Angeles-based addiction specialist Dr. Joe Haraszti notes that those who take Adderrall unnecessarily "can become very impulsive," exhibiting behavior such as "driving around until all hours of the morning...smoking heavily...tweeting...and texting all night long." Sound familiar?
Moreover, adds fellow addiction specialist Dr. Marc Kern, Adderall use often leads to excessive alcohol use:
"The Adderall counteracts the sedative side effects of alcohol use … making these people often drink more than someone who does not take the drug."
The good news for Lohan? According to sources at the UCLA Medical Center, the actress has successfully been "weaned off" the various medications she's been taking—which reportedly include, along with Adderall, Dilaudid, Ambien, Zoloft, heartburn medication Nexium and antidepressant Trazodone—with no adverse effects, meaning that she might not be as dependent as previously believed, and thus may be eligible for the early release from rehab that she's eager for.
No doubt that would put a smile on her face that no pill could provide.
