Author and movie-maker Michael Crichton has reportedly died after a struggle with cancer at age 66.

Chrichton gained his first renown as author of the 1971 science fiction novel The Andromeda Strain.  The book tapped into a fascination with space travel, and was one of the first popular works of fiction that dealt with a post-apocalyptic future.

Chricton also wrote the massive bestseller Jurassic Park and teamed with director Steven Spielberg in transferring his literary vision to the big screen.

The highly regarded writer probably reached his widest audience as creator of the television drama ER.

“Through his books, Michael Crichton served as an inspiration to students of all ages, challenged scientists in many fields, and illuminated the mysteries of the world in a way we could all understand,” his family said in a statement.
