Michael Phelps Suspended and Dropped

on Feb. 6, 2009 07:00 AM / 2 Comments

Multiple Olympic gold medalist Michael Phelps, 23, will not have his sponsorship contract renewed with Kelloggs cereal manufacturer due to his bong photo scandal, according to the Associated Press.

Phelps has also been suspended by USA Swimming for three months.

TMZ reports that the organization is also withholding financial support for the athlete.

A photo depicting Phelps, who returned to practice this week, smoking from a bong was publicized last weekend by News of the World.

Kellogg Co. has stated that the athlete is "not consistent with the image of Kellogg."

Phelps' other endorsements with Visa, Speedo, and watchmaker Omega seem to be in intact.

"This is not a situation where any anti-doping rule was violated, but we decided to send a strong message to Michael because he disappointed so many people, particularly the hundreds of thousands of USA Swimming member kids who look up to him as a role model and a hero," USA Swimming said in a statement.

Phelps recently told the press that he is considering dropping out of the 2012 Summer Olympics in London due to the recent scandal.
